Garry Tonon targeting MMA return against Martin Nguyen, Nguyen accepts call out

In an impressive display of grappling prowess, Garry Tonon secured a victory over Johnny Nunez in their featherweight match at ONE on Prime Video 6, held at the Impact Arena in Bangkok, Thailand. Tonon defeated  a TUF and Bellator veteran Nunez early in the first round with a kimura submission.

Tonon wasted no time in attempting a standing kimura, successfully taking Nunez down to the mat. With his opponent’s left arm firmly in his grasp, Tonon applied pressure, forcing the tap out from Nunez. The official stoppage time was recorded at just 1:53 in the first round.

Tonon’s victory comes after a loss to Thanh Le during his attempt to capture the ONE Championship featherweight title.

He showed interest in facing Martin Nguyen next.

Former two-division MMA champion Martin Nguyen delivered a unanimous decision win against Brazilian debutant Leonardo Casotti at ONE Championship’s event in Bangkok, Thailand on Saturday.

The win was a crucial one for the 33-year-old Vietnamese-Australian, who was looking to bounce back after suffering a knockout loss to Ilya Freymanov in his previous bout.

Nguyen is open to the idea of facing Tonon and believes it would be an exciting matchup for fans.

“Thanh wants a rematch. Garry wants a title shot against Tang Kai. Garry just won his last bout against a non-contender. So this division’s all over the place when it comes to title challenges for the belt.”

Nguyen suffered a knockout loss to Thanh Le in 2020, similar to Garry Tonon.

Le won the title against Nguyen but then lost it to Kai Tang. ONE FC will be making their US debut later this spring.
