WATCH: MMA ref oblivious to BJJ let’s action continue with one guy completely out

Mixed martial arts is a sport that requires precision and safety measures to ensure the well-being of the participants. Unfortunately, in recent history, there have been some glaring lapses in judgement and competence by referees.

One such incident occurred during Fury FC 76 in San Antonio, Texas on March 24, 2023.

The main event of the night featured two talented men: Edgar Chairez, a veteran of the Dana White Contender Series, and Gianni Vazquez. The match was closely contested, with both giving their all in the cage. However, things took a worrying turn in the fourth round when Chairez locked in a tight triangle on Vazquez.

Vazquez went out while trapped in the triangle, but the referee, Frank Collazo, failed to notice it. Chairez then transitioned to an armbar and held it for a shocking 20 seconds until Vazquez finally came to and tapped out.

The victory for Chairez was significant, but it was overshadowed by the evident incompetency of the referee. The incident has since gone viral on social media, with many MMA fans and experts expressing their concern over the situation. Some have even called for Collazo to be banned from refereeing any more bouts.

Thankfully, Vazquez appeared to be ok when he came back to it and stood during the decision. However, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of having qualified and competent referees in MMA events.

Sadly, it appeared his arm was less okay after this experience. An MMA reporter publicized earlier today that he had lost all feeling in his arm.

“Gianni Vazquez was rushed to the ER after and he can’t move his arm.

He hasn’t seen the doctor yet but at best it’s a severe arm dislocation”
