Mackenzie Dern had to change her BJJ meta ahead of UFC return: Hold the position, Don’t lose the position

Mackenzie Dern is a top UFC women’s strawweight contender. She has announced a shift in her mental approach ahead of her next bout. Rather than solely focusing on getting a submission or knockout, Dern is determined to play smarter and win each round.

Dern is currently ranked seventh in the UFC strawweight division and is set to face the thirteenth-ranked Angela Hill in the main event of UFC FN on May 13. Her previous appearance was in October of last year, where she lost to Yan Xiaonan in a close bout that went to a majority decision.

Reflecting on her loss, Dern acknowledged that she was too focused on getting a finish and believes that this cost her. However, she has learned from this experience and is now ready to return to the win column. She expressed her desire to correct her mistakes and continue her winning streak.

During a recent interview with The Schmo, Dern mentioned that she now understands that MMA has rules beyond just submission and finishing. She plans to go into her next with a smarter approach and to be the better martial artist in all areas.

As a seasoned competitor with tons of bouts under her belt, Dern sees Angela Hill as the perfect opponent for her to play smart with. She is confident that with her new mindset and strategy, she will come out victorious.
