WATCH: Shoulder lock causes instant injury in competition

BJJ is an amateur sport and even elite competitions don’t offer a reward that’s substantial enough to sport yourself as an athlete. This is one of the factors contributing to a video that recently went viral.

In the video, we observe a no name competitor lock up his opponent in a type of a standing shoulder lock akin to Mir lock, and crank it to completion causing shoulder injury almost certainly.

Some on lookers made observations that this type of a move should be eliminated because a submission isn’t applied in a controlled manner. Regulating the move is highly unlikely but it certainly merits a discussion considering how problematic it can be.

This move is especially controversial considering what happened back in 2021.

In any combat sport, tensions can run high, but some moves are universally considered dirty. One such case is yanking a submission, which transpired between MMA fighters Orlando Sanchez and Sean Strickland.

During their sparring session, Sanchez appeared to yank on Strickland’s arm, prompting a heated reaction from the latter. Strickland was visibly upset and even threw some strikes at Sanchez, who kept pretending nothing had happened.

And if there’s any doubt as to whether the move is malicious – it’s also something Jon Jones does. That should tell you everything you need to know.
