WATCH: Renzo Gracie teaches submission he used in viral subway incident

Renzo Gracie  is renowned for his jovial personality and remarkable skills. But he’s no stranger to real life quandaries. A little while ago, he was in an incident at the subway.

This is particularly pertinent given what recently transpired and the charges that are being filed.

Renzo Gracie’s martial arts journey spans over two decades, from 1992 to 2010, with a brief return in 2018 for ONE FC.

With 23 professional bouts under his belt, Renzo has left an indelible mark in the MMA world.

However, it’s important to note that Renzo has had a history of being hot-headed, often finding himself in incidents outside the ring. In this particular incident, Renzo’s actions were captured on video by a bystander, further emphasizing the gravity of the situation.

Eyewitnesses recount an encounter where Renzo Gracie, engaged in conversation with one of his employees, a fellow black belt, was confronted for speaking Portuguese in a subway.

Allegedly, the assailant, a black man, aggressively demanded that Renzo speak English in that setting. Renzo, recognizing the incident as a display of discrimination, responded accordingly, escalating the situation further.

With his jiu jitsu skills, Renzo was able to control the assailant using a submission hold, ultimately compelling him to apologize. Once the situation was defused, Renzo shared the incident with his family members, even mentioning that his t-shirt was torn in the process.

Renzo Gracie’s influence extends beyond his personal accomplishments. As a leading figure in the Gracie family, he has established numerous affiliated clubs, fostering the growth of jiu jitsu enthusiasts worldwide.

Renzo’s dedication to the art has earned him the reputation of being one of the wealthiest members of the Gracie family. Furthermore, his contributions to the sport are exemplified by the fact that he has awarded the prestigious black belt to former UFC champion Matt Serra, who continues to carry on the Gracie legacy.

While Renzo Gracie is revered for his talents, his brothers have also made headlines, albeit for different reasons. Tragically, Renzo’s brother Ryan lost his life while incarcerated after an incident in Brazil.

Additionally, another brother, Ralph, made headlines when he sucker-punched a fellow BJJ black belt during a tournament, resulting in the loss of multiple front teeth for the victim. Ralph faced legal consequences, including a 180-day jail sentence, three years of formal probation, a $50,000 fine, and mandatory anger management.

Gracie recently taught the Von Flue submission he used to defuse the situation safely.

“So when I did this, he had two options. Or he brings me down. Or I take his back. You see? He can’t stop lot. So on that moment, he goes for a headlock. He brushed my head as he brings me down I do this. Straight to his back everywhere you go. He tries to come up. I go this way. And then I grab him with a lot of love…”
