WATCH: Wild moment moms brawl at under-16 girls’ basketball game

In a surprising turn of events, chaos ensued during an under-16s girls’ basketball clash. The spirited game turned into a disturbing brawl involving both parents and players.

The incident unfolded at the Darebin Community Sports Stadium in Reservoir, northern Melbourne. It took place on February 24 during a girl’s A-grade basketball game between the Darebin Giants and the Doreen Cougars.

During the match, parents started punching each other on the court.

Tensions between the two clubs had been simmering for a considerable period, as reported by 9News. The situation reached a boiling point during the game, with parents resorting to physical altercations on the court.

Australian basketball icon Andrew Gaze expressed his dismay at the surprising footage. He described the incident as ‘appalling’ and ‘disappointing,’ emphasizing the inappropriate involvement of family members and spectators in an under-16 girls’ basketball match.

He said: “You never like to see violence anywhere but when you are talking about a domestic game of basketball that emotions can run this high, it’s just disappointing.”

The catalyst for the brawl was a punch thrown by one parent at another, triggering a cascade of chaotic events. Spectators rushed onto the court.

In the midst of the melee, a player was seen running into the crowd. The player was seen seemingly stomping on another individual repeatedly.

Basketball Victoria promptly responded to the disgraceful incident, announcing the ban of both teams for the remainder of the season pending a tribunal hearing. In a statement, they expressed their disappointment in the behavior displayed during the game and outlined their commitment to maintaining a positive and respectful environment.

The statement read: “Basketball Victoria and the Eastern Districts Junior Basketball Association (EDJBA) are disappointed by the behaviour displayed at the game on Saturday and the actions of a number of individuals bringing the game of basketball into disrepute.”

“Following initial investigations, Basketball Victoria confirms that it is in the process of issuing appropriate sanctions against a number of individuals (players, spectators, coaches and team managers) for breaches of Basketball Victoria’s code of conduct and by-laws.”

“[We are] committed to creating an environment where the community can enjoy participation in activities, events or programs without experiencing abusive, insulting, threatening or other anti-social behaviour.”
