The UFC’s bantamweight division witnessed a remarkable event on August 12, as 29-year-old Da’Mon Blackshear emerged victorious in spectacular fashion at UFC Vegas 78.
Blackshear faced off against Jose Johnson in a bantamweight clash during the prelims of the event. The contest proved to be a brief affair, with ‘Da Monster’ showcasing his skills by locking his opponent in an exceptionally rare twister submission and securing the victory in the opening round.
This occurrence marked just the third instance of a UFC bout concluding with the distinctive twister submission.
The inaugural twister submission in the UFC occurred way back in March 2011. Chan Sung Jung, famously known as ‘The Korean Zombie,’ made his promotional debut at UFC FN 24 against Leonard Garcia. This rematch was a chance for redemption, as Jung had lost the initial encounter via split decision. Demonstrating his prowess, the 36-year-old secured the first-ever twister submission victory in the promotion’s history.
Nearly eight years later, the UFC experienced its second twister submission. Bryce Mitchell and Matt Sayles engaged in a catchweight bout (148.5 pounds) in December 2019.
Remarkably, in only his second UFC outing, Mitchell flawlessly executed the exceedingly rare submission in the opening round, etching his name in the annals of UFC history.

After amassing a 12-4 professional record, ‘Da Monster’ made his entry into the UFC. However, his journey faced hurdles. Blackshear encountered Youssef Zalal in his promotional debut, resulting in a majority draw. His second UFC bout saw him pitted against Farid Basharat, with Blackshear succumbing to a unanimous decision loss.
Yet, in June 2023, the tide turned for the 29-year-old. He secured his maiden victory within the promotion by delivering a knockout blow to Luan Lucerda in the second round of their bout.
Now armed with two successive triumphs, ‘Da Monster’ is gaining momentum. With strategic exploitation, Da’Mon Blackshear could be poised to ascend the bantamweight rankings and potentially break into the coveted top 15.
