The African Amputee Football Cup of Nations final turned chaotic as players from Ghana and Morocco clashed using their crutches as weapons.
On Monday night, Ghana’s amputee football team secured a thrilling 2-1 victory over Morocco in Cairo. They ended up earning their place in the 2026 Amputee World Cup. However, the victory celebrations were marred by an altercation between the teams as the trophy presentation was being set up.
A video posted on social media showed that the brawl was sparked by a disagreement between two players. This initial confrontation quickly escalated as teammates and staff from both sides joined the fray. The footage depicted players wielding their crutches to strike one another in a chaotic scene.
The exact cause of the dispute between the two players remains unknown. Despite the controversy, Ghana’s head coach Stephen Richard Obeng expressed immense pride in his team’s achievement.
Obeng stated after the match: “We feel very proud. The God we trusted made it happen. We’re champions in Africa for the third time in the space of two years. Despite the challenges we went through, we did it.”
“It is a massive motivation to everybody that you might not have the support you need but you can go beyond the odds and make it happen.”
Obeng was named the best coach for 2024 African Amputee Cup of Nations after Ghana’s victory on Monday.
Ghana’s journey to the title was near flawless. They dominated their group stage, winning all three matches, scoring 11 goals and conceding just one. Mubarak Mohammed scored a stunning long-range goal in the final. He was named Player of the Tournament for his exceptional performance.
The Minister of Youth and Sports Hon Mustapha Ussif also extended his congratulations to the team.
He stated: “Your determination and skill have once again made Ghana proud. Kudos to the entire team for this remarkable victory!”
Ghana’s victory not only marks a significant achievement in African amputee football but also sets a strong precedent for their performance in the upcoming 2026 Amputee World Cup.
