Gordon Ryan throws shade at Musumeci: “He can’t just be fighting MMA guys in ONE”

Mikey Musumeci is widely respected as a grappler. The multiple-time IBJJF World Champion signed with ONE Championship and defeated a number of relatively unknown opponents with backgrounds in MMA and Sambo.

In a recent interview, BJJ phenom Gordon Ryan gave his take on Musumeci’s career so far and what it will take for him to solidify his spot at the top of the sport.

“I think Mikey is up there as well, but I think if Mikey, if he wants to establish himself as the number one pound-for-pound guy, has to, he’s won no-gi worlds, he’s won worlds before, I think he has to do ADCC,” Ryan stated.

Musumeci competed at Road to ADCC in 2021 and defeated Geo Martinez in the 66kg category.

While recognizing Musumeci’s credentials, which also include other titles, Ryan believes ADCC is the crowning achievement in no-gi grappling.

Ryan went on to explain, “I recognize it’s a little bit small for that weight class, but he can’t just be fighting MMA guys in ONE, which I think is great, but I think if he really wants to be the number one pound-for-pound spot, I think he has to do ADCC.”

Musumeci is undersized as a bantamweight in MMA, usually giving up strength and size against opponents. Ryan contends that if he wants to solidify his spot as the pound-for-pound best, Musumeci should return to ADCC and test himself against the top no-gi guys around his weight.

Musumeci has not publicly responded to Ryan’s comments yet. But the challenge has been issued for the technical wizard to re-enter the ADCC trials and prove he can conquer that arena as well.
