WATCH: Kiwi tourists banished from Thailand for wrestling gun away from a police officer

Amidst a recent incident on a renowned resort island, Thailand’s immigration authorities have taken action by revoking the visas of two tourists from New Zealand. The tourists, identified as Hamish Day and Oscar Mattson Day, faced allegations surrounding an altercation with a traffic police officer. These accusations, including robbery, causing physical harm to an on-duty officer, attempted bribery, and driving a motorcycle without a license, were addressed by Phuket provincial police chief Sinlert Sukhum during a recent press briefing. Authorities are pursuing legal measures to prevent their release on bail.

According to police reports, the confrontation ensued when officer Somsak Noo-iat attempted to intervene as the individuals were reportedly speeding on their motorbikes. Allegedly, they attempted to evade the officer and even offered a bribe, which was declined. In an attempt to document the incident, the officer’s endeavor to film the individuals led to a struggle, resulting in the firearm being discharged. Fortunately, no injuries were reported from the discharged bullet.

Footage of the incident, which rapidly circulated online and gained traction through Thai media platforms, depicted bystanders urging restraint. However, the video fails to provide context leading up to the altercation.

Police Chief Sukhum made claims suggesting that one of the individuals involved possessed skills in mixed martial arts, alleging their involvement in the altercation.

Despite the gravity of the charges, the accused brothers maintain their innocence and have refrained from making any statements regarding the incident.

Efforts to reach the brothers for comment were unsuccessful at the time of reporting. Notably, the circulated video lacks footage leading up to the altercation.

Providing an update on the condition of officer Somsak, his supervisor, Chalong police chief Ekkarat Plaiduang, confirmed his injuries but assured a steady recovery.

Expressing disapproval of such incidents, Phuket governor Sophon Suwannarat emphasized the importance of upholding standards of behavior and adherence to local laws among tourists visiting the region. Consequently, heightened vigilance and scrutiny are anticipated concerning tourist behavior to mitigate potential transgressions.
