Michael Perez wins ADCC Trials 99+ division despite weighing just 79kg

In the fiercely contested realm of grappling, Michael Perez emerges as a remarkable force, defying expectations by clinching victory in the ADCC Trials 99+ division despite his relatively modest weight of 79kg.

Having relocated to Puerto Rico some time ago, Perez found himself in the role of BJJ coach to none other than Jake Paul. However, prior to this move, Perez was an active figure in the BJJ community, showcasing his prowess in memorable performances. Notably, he secured victory over ADCC silver medalist Craig Jones at Kasai Pro 2, breaking Jones’ wrist in the process.

It’s very rare to see someone who could arguably make 77kg compete in the 99+ division but it makes sense. 99kg division famously has a different dynamic. Orlando Sanchez famously won the division and didn’t score or submit anyone in the tournament.

Furthermore, the ADCC’s openweight division stands as the pinnacle of competitive grappling, with only a select few, such as Marcelo Garcia and Lachlan Giles, from the 77kg category having ever medaled in its history.

In a remarkable display of skill and determination, ADCC veteran Michael Perez reclaimed his position atop the Trials podium, triumphing in the +99kg category despite weighing a mere 175 lbs. With a stellar record of three submissions in six matches, all accomplished within a swift 90 seconds, Perez showcased his dominance on the mat.

As the lightest representative from Atos currently slated for the ADCC roster, Perez’s impending competition in the heaviest weight category at the ADCC World Championships adds another layer of intrigue to his journey.
