BJJ Ace Gordon Ryan reacts to commenters criticizing viral armbar self defense video

Infamous Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu champion Gordon Ryan has weighed in on a recent viral self-defense video that sparked heated debate online. The video shows a man walking up to another individual and attempting to physically assault him without provocation. However, theĀ  man successfully defended himself, ultimately breaking the aggressor’s arm.

While some viewers praised the defensive actions as justified, others criticized the level of force used as excessive. Ryan firmly disagrees with those who deemed the response “too much,” arguing that the victim was well within their rights to neutralize the threat.

“A guy walked up to a guy minding his own business and tried to beat him up, and he got his arm broken,” Ryan stated. “If he would have gotten killed, that would have been too much. That was not too much.”

Ryan contends that failure to deliver harsh consequences enables aggressors to continue their violent behavior toward potentially more vulnerable targets. “If people like that attack you, and you are capable of defending yourself and teaching them consequences, and you don’t do it, it’s a very selfish thing,” he explained.

The BJJ black belt advocates for decisive actions that leave a lasting impression, suggesting the assailant “should have been beaten so badly that he knows that at any point ever in his life again, he tries to attack a random person who did nothing to him, that he should have PTSD.”

Ryan believes a stern, uncompromising response is the most effective deterrent against future unprovoked assaults. “That’s the only way that’s going to fix this problem of random people attacking innocent pedestrians and citizens,” he stated. “The only way this is going to stop is if they’re brutally beaten to the point where they’re almost dead.”
