Makhachev completely dismisses Poirier’s BJJ: ‘His weak point is wrestling and grappling’

Islam Makhachev is confident in his ability to secure an advantageous outcome in his upcoming bout against Dustin Poirier, even if he respects his skills.

For his fourth straight victory, Arman Tsarukyan beat Charles Oliveira by split decision at UFC 300. Shortly after having his hand raised, Tsarukyan declined a lightweight title match against Makhachev at UFC 302 in June. He wanted to make sure he was fully fit for the occasion.

Therefore, Dustin Poirier stepped in to seize the opportunity. He will now be facing Makhachev in the highly anticipated main event in Newark, New Jersey.

In an interview with TMZ Sports, Makhachev analyzed Poirier’s combat style. He identified wrestling and grappling as potential weaknesses.

Makhachev stated: “Dustin, he’s a warrior, legend. He have more than everybody experience in this sport, but his problem is his style. Just one problem this guy have. His weak point is wrestling and grappling. I have the key for the easy fight. I think if I follow the plan, I can beat him easy.”

While acknowledging Poirier’s striking skills and legendary status in the sport, Makhachev emphasized his readiness for tough matches.

Makhachev went on to say: “People who can take him down, hold him there, always give him problem… Dustin, be ready, be ready, and wrestling a lot. I defend my neck, I’m ready for your guillotine. That’s why it’s not happening in our fight, but 1 will be ready.”

Islam Makhachev has won thirteen straight bouts, including three for the lightweight title. However, he is not disregarding Poirier in any way.

Makhachev said: “I’m not underestimating Poirier because this guy is a legend. He can beat everybody. He have better than everybody striking in my division, that’s why I prepare myself for the tough fights, for the next fight, for everybody.”

After an almost eight-month hiatus, Makhachev will return to the octagon at UFC 302, following his last victory against Alexander Volkanovski in October 2023. His readiness to face Poirier shows his determination to maintain his winning streak and defend his lightweight throne.
