Musumeci criticizes Aljamain Sterling’s reaction to losing BJJ match: If you accept the rule set, you can’t really complain after you do the rule set

In the world of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Mikey Musumeci has never been one to mince words, especially when it comes to upholding the integrity and spirit of the sport he loves. Recently, the accomplished grappler set his sights on fellow practitioner Aljamain Sterling, criticizing the MMA fighter’s reaction to a loss in a jiu-jitsu competition.

The controversy arose when Sterling expressed frustration over his opponent’s approach in their match, which involved excessive guard pulling and a lack of active engagement. However, Musumeci was quick to point out the flaw in Sterling’s complaints.

“If you accept the rule set, you can’t really complain after you do the rule set,” Musumeci stated firmly, referencing the fact that guard pulling is a legitimate and accepted tactic within the sport’s ruleset.

Musumeci’s stance stems from his belief that competitors should fully understand and respect the rules of the game they’ve agreed to participate in. While he has been vocal about his dislike for excessive guard pulling and lack of active engagement, he acknowledges that these tactics are permitted within the established guidelines.

“It wasn’t even directed to Aljamain,” Musumeci clarified. “This is about people pulling guard.”

The issue at hand is not guard pulling itself, but rather the failure of some competitors to actively work to pass the guard and attack with submissions once the position is established. Musumeci believes that this approach detracts from the spirit of the sport and fails to showcase the full breadth of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu’s techniques and strategies.

“If you do a jiu-jitsu match and you’re not there to pass the guard and you’re just like complaining about it, then it’s like, what are you doing there?” Musumeci questioned, emphasizing the need for active engagement and attacking mindset.
