In an odd incident in South Korea, a man faced severe consequences after attempting mixed martial arts move on a friend, leading to serious injuries. According to a report from The Korea Times, the man, in his twenties, inflicted severe head injuries on his friend while “testing” a takedown move out and about in Ulsan in January 2023. The affected man suffered injuries to the occipital area of his brain, resulting in anosmia (a partial or full loss of smell) and permanent disability.
The attacker claimed the move was intended as “just for fun” and argued that the severe outcome was unintentional and unforeseeable. However, the Ulsan District Court did not accept this defense, noting the man’s apparent experience in martial arts.
The judges emphasized that anyone with martial arts training should be aware of the risks associated with performing such moves on hard ground. Consequently, the attacker was convicted and sentenced to 18 months in jail.
The court’s decision underscored the foreseeability of injury from such actions, especially given the dangerous nature of takedowns and slams even within the controlled environment of professional MMA. The incident highlights the inherent risks when untrained individuals attempt to mimic professional fighters, leading to potentially life-altering consequences.
This case draws attention to similar dangers in professional MMA, high-profile incidents involving fighters like Rose Namajunas have demonstrated the severe injuries that can result from takedowns and slams in the ring. These examples illustrate the hazards of grappling scenarios, which are exacerbated when such moves are attempted on unforgiving surfaces like concrete.
