Craig Jones: (John Danaher) has a Steven Seagal mythology about him

In a recent podcast appearance, BJJ black belt Craig Jones offered his candid take on the aura surrounding his former coach, the enigmatic John Danaher. Drawing an intriguing parallel, Jones likened Danaher’s persona to that of the controversial actor Steven Seagal, known for his eccentric on-screen depictions of martial arts prowess.

“He’s like a cheesy martial arts character that you like. His personality should be that of a guy that’s not a good coach, because most of the time guys like that with that eccentric personality, he’s got injuries, so he never competes,” Jones remarked, adding, “You can’t train like guys like that in martial arts typically raise a little red flags, but his students produce good results. So it becomes this conundrum.”

Despite Danaher’s unconventional demeanor and the skepticism it might ordinarily invite, Jones acknowledges the undeniable success of his teachings, as evidenced by the exceptional performances of his students on the competitive circuit. This dichotomy between Danaher’s idiosyncratic persona and the tangible accomplishments of his pupils has fostered an air of mystique around the acclaimed coach.

“He’s like… he has a Steven Seagal mythology about him. But the results back it up,” Jones affirmed.

Jones’ insights offer a unique perspective on the cult of personality that has developed around John Danaher, drawing comparisons to the larger-than-life on-screen martial arts persona cultivated by Seagal. While Danaher’s methods and philosophies may seem unorthodox on the surface, the proof, according to Jones, lies in the remarkable achievements of his students, lending credence to the “mythology” surrounding the renowned coach.

As the BJJ community continues to dissect and analyze the dynamics within the sport’s elite circles, Jones’ comments shed light on the enigmatic figure of John Danaher, whose impact on the art transcends conventional norms and narratives.
