In a disturbing turn of events, a night meant to celebrate academic achievements was marred by violence at a high school graduation ceremony in New Jersey. The incident occurred as the Westwood High School commencement exercises concluded on Thursday, sending shockwaves through the community.
According to the Washington Township Police Department, multiple altercations broke out on the school’s football field as the seniors and their families were leaving the event. Eyewitness video shared on social media captured the chaotic scenes, depicting two separate confrontations unfolding on the field.
“This was supposed to be an enjoyable night that the Westwood High School Senior class worked hard for and have been waiting for, which has been tainted due to the egregious behavior by some,” the police said in a statement.
Authorities intervened to bring the situation under control, but not before one individual was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Several others also received medical attention at the scene for their injuries.
The police are currently investigating the incident and are aware of the video footage that has been circulating online. They expressed their disappointment, stating, “Unfortunately, this type of behavior is occurring more often than not.”
Westwood High School’s principal, Frank Connelly, acknowledged the unfortunate events in a tweet the following morning, congratulating the graduates but refusing to let the incident overshadow their hard-earned achievements.
“I am so proud of each and everyone of you,” Connelly wrote. “It is an honor to serve as your principal and to be part of this amazing community. I refuse to allow anything to take away from that.”
The high school, which serves students from both Westwood and Washington Township, has an enrollment of approximately 840 students. This incident has left the community searching for answers and hoping to prevent such outbreaks from occurring at future events.
