Popular science-based bodybuilder Jeff Nippard recently delved into the darker side of using PEDs like anabolic ster*ids. While the muscle-building benefits of these substances are well known, Nippard highlights some lesser-discussed downsides that users may not be aware of.
One particularly concerning effect, according to Nippard, is the potential for PEDs to accelerate brain aging and decrease cognitive function over time. He cites a 2021 study that used MRI scans to compare the brains of over 200 weightlifters, half natural and half enhanced. The researchers found that those using PEDs had significantly larger “brain age gaps” – meaning their brains appeared older than their chronological age.
To lend credibility to the discussion he also included a discussion with Dr. Michael Israetel, who has a degree in Sport Physiology and personal experience with PED use.
“The scans revealed that the lifters who took ster*ids had a significantly bigger brain age gap,” Nippard explains. “When they looked at the natural brains, their brain age matched their actual age. But the brains of the enhanced lifters looked much older than they should for their age.”
Nippard also interviews . Dr. Israetel confirms that some types of intelligence “degrade over time with ster*id use” in both current and former users. “This is tested,” he says. “Most people [are] totally unaware that ster*ids have that potential effect on IQ reduction.”
Beyond cognitive impacts, the video covers other underreported side effects like increased anxiety, aggression, hair loss, gyno (development of breast tissue in men), sexual dysfunction, and a higher risk of heart issues and premature death. Nippard argues that many influencers are not fully transparent about the negative effects of PEDs.
“A lot of fitness influencers are only ever partially transparent,” he says. “They say they’re on ster*ids and show their gains, but rarely show any of the bad stuff. So the only conclusion is that ster*ids are amazing, but that’s misleading.”
While Nippard doesn’t condemn PED use altogether, he stresses the importance of making fully informed decisions – considering both the well-known benefits and under-discussed downsides.
“I want people to at least be aware of exactly what you’re doing and the full effect it has – good and bad,” Nippard states.
The video shares an interesting perspective on often overlooked side effects. This is particularly pertinent if you’re participating in a PED-ridden sport like BJJ, where there are a lot of physical demands and expectations on your body.
