In a video that went viral, fitness YouTuber Jonni Shreve faced off against Dr. Mike Israetel, a skilled brown belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. The stakes? A grueling grappling challenge with a wild twist involving massive calorie penalties.
The rules were simple but daunting: a 6-minute grappling match, with every minute Jonni survived without being submitted earning him the right to avoid eating 1,000 calories. On the flip side, every minute Dr. Mike caught Jonni in a submission hold, Jonni would have to eat 1,000 extra calories. The potential damage? If Jonni lasted the entire 6 minutes, the ripped bodybuilder would avoid the calorie onslaught completely. But if Dr. Mike caught him early and often, Jonni could be facing a nightmarish 6,000 calorie cheat day.
From the opening seconds, it was clear Jonni was out of his element against the seasoned grappler. Dr. Mike constantly maintained dominant positions, nearly submitting the muscular YouTube star multiple times with chokes, armlocks, and other crafty techniques. Jonni used his explosive strength to narrowly escape or stall many of the submission attempts, but he spent most of the match pinned down or defending desperately.
Dr Mike is certainly no stranger to bodybuilding but it was an interesting challenge to watch none the less.
We recently wrote a bit about the dark side of PEDs, which even impacts the brain. In a segment, Dr. Mike Israetel who holds a PhD in Sport Physiology cautions about the effects PED use can have on the brain. Israetel sheds light on the potential for PEDs to accelerate brain aging and decrease cognitive function over time. Citing a 2021 study that used MRI scans to compare the brains of over 200 weightlifters, half of whom were natural and half enhanced, Nippard reveals that PED users had significantly larger “brain age gaps,” meaning their brains appeared older than their chronological age.
Dr. Israetel confirmed that st*roid use can degrade certain types of intelligence over time in both current and former users. He noted that most people are unaware of the potential for ster*ids to reduce IQ.
