Former UFC champion Demetrious Johnson has announced his participation in the 2024 IBJJF World Master tournament, set to take place from August 29 to 31 in Las Vegas. The announcement came directly from the IBJJF’s Instagram account, where they shared highlights of Johnson’s BJJ matches and expressed their excitement to witness the MMA legend’s black belt debut.
“Who’s ready to watch ‘Mighty Mouse’ Demetrious Johnson in his black belt debut? He’s registered for the World Master 2024. We can’t wait to watch DJ back in action. Registration is filling up fast for this event. Head over to IBJJF.com to sign up today,” the IBJJF captioned the post.
Johnson, known as one of the greatest mixed martial artists of all time, is thrilled to add more accolades to his growing BJJ portfolio. He has previously captured gold medals at the 2023 World Masters IBJJF Jiu-Jitsu Championships and the 2024 IBJJF Pan American Championships, both in the Masters 2 featherweight brown belt division. This will be the first time he competes at black belt level.
Commenting on the IBJJF’s announcement, Johnson expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “Oh lord here we go 😊.”
Johnson previously expressed his admiration for Gi BJJ on his yt channel. Unlike many MMA star, he’s a huge fan of Gi BJJ.
“What I like about ti gi, vs Nogi is that you have more options to do something, control somebody’s posture.”
“In nogi, it’s constantly pushing, controlling your arms, pushing, pushing, looking to pass, pushing to pass. In no-gi, I pulled guard and I pulled the homeboy’s lapel and he was trying to pass my guard. And I was like, okay, I can’t get swept on my back because of the way you’re moving. I’m going back to my feet and I’ll reshoot again,” Johnson explained.
