Jiu-jitsu star Mikey Musumeci has announced he will not be participating in the Craig Jones Invitational (CJI) after all. This comes just days after his participation was publicly announced, creating a stir in the grappling community.
The initial announcement of Musumeci’s involvement in CJI 2024 came via a promotional image shared on social media. The image featured Musumeci smiling against a backdrop of U.S. currency, with text declaring “SUPERFIGHT MIKEY MUSUMECI JOINS CJI.”
However, Musumeci has now taken to social media to clarify his status. In a post, he stated: “Hey guys unfortunately I am out of cji now. We were attempting to make a legendary match that would have probably been the most viewed jiu jitsu match ever but it fell through at the end.”
The opponent for Musumeci was widely speculated to be one of the two BJJ legends that retired young – Marcelo Garcia or Rafa Mendes. Sadly it appears they were unable to reach a conclusion. Craig jones hinted that this might happen couple of days ago on r BJJ when he revealed that an unnamed BJJ legend is requiring a huge amount of money to unretire.
Despite the disappointment, Musumeci expressed gratitude towards Craig Jones, saying: “I want to thank @craigjonesbjj for the opportunity he gave me; I will still be heavily supporting his event and what he is doing for jiu jitsu!”
Musumeci also reminded fans of his upcoming match, stating: “2 months still until the biggest match of my life Sept 6 in Denver with Kade in @onechampionship God bless everyone ❤️🙏”
This refers to his highly anticipated submission grappling match at ONE 168: Denver, where Musumeci will challenge Kade Ruotolo for the ONE Flyweight Submission Grappling World Championship.
