The Science behind B Team’s lower intensity sessions in ADCC/CJI camp led by Dima Murovanni

Tthe B Team has been recognized for its wealth of talented athletes and knowledgeable minds. However, the lack of a cohesive structure has sometimes hindered their ability to fully optimize their potential. That is, until the arrival of Dima Murovanni, a renowned jiu-jitsu coach, who has been tasked with guiding the B Team through their preparation for the upcoming ADCC and CJI events.

Murovanni’s approach to the camp has been a departure from the traditional high-intensity, grueling workouts that the B Team athletes have grown accustomed to. Instead, he has emphasized the importance of controlled, lower-intensity sessions, with the goal of minimizing the risk of injury and allowing the athletes to recover properly between the punishing rounds.

“The thing is, everybody is different in here with different strengths and different weaknesses,” Murovanni explains. “So, we have to look at the rule sets, the history of the people that win the tournaments, and try to balance everything out.”

By focusing on heart rate management, Murovanni aims to ensure that the athletes are pushing themselves to the optimal level during each phase of their training. The first match of the day, for instance, is designed to be completed at a high heart rate, while the subsequent matches are intended to be performed at a medium or low heart rate, allowing the athletes to recover and prepare for the next intense bout.

“It’s important that they train together so we can mix up the skill sets and different positions,” Murovanni says. “But I think we’re on a good way, and the more we do it day by day, week by week, the better it becomes.”

Murovanni’s aproach is actually supported by scientific evidence.

In a recent discussion, renowned neuroscientist Andrew Huberman, Ph.D., provided valuable insights on the importance of “Zone 2” cardio and how it can enhance various aspects of fitness.

The key takeaway from Huberman’s perspective is that Zone 2 cardio not only benefits cardiovascular health but also enhances other aspects of fitness, including strength training, hypertrophy training, and speed work, without impeding their progress. This means that individuals can maintain their regular exercise routines while simultaneously reaping the rewards of Zone 2 cardio through their daily movements.

In a compelling conversation with Dr. Peter Attia, exercise physiologist Iñigo San-Millán, Ph.D. delved into the importance of incorporating zone 2 cardio training, even for those new to this type of exercise.

Dr. San-Millán emphasized that while high-intensity training has its merits, it cannot fully replace the benefits of steady-state, moderate-intensity cardio. He highlighted the crucial adaptations that occur at the mitochondrial level through zone 2 training, which are essential for improving fat oxidation, lactate clearance, and overall metabolic function.

For those new to this training modality, Dr. San-Millán recommended a structured approach. He suggested starting with 3-4 sessions per week, each lasting 1-1.5 hours. This frequency and duration, he explained, are crucial for driving the desired mitochondrial adaptations, even if the individual may not have the time or inclination for endurance-focused exercise.

Interestingly, Dr. San-Millán acknowledged the challenges of maintaining a consistent zone 2 pace, particularly when exercising outdoors. He highlighted the advantages of using a stationary bike or trainer, which allows for more precise control and efficiency in maintaining the target intensity. This is especially interested due to the fact this might also be very hard in BJJ>

The athletes have embraced Murovanni’s approach, recognizing the long-term benefits of this structured, methodical training regimen. As one of the B Team members, Niki Ryan, notes, “It’s nice to kind of have like a head coach so none of the athletes have to really think about anything. They just come in and do what he says.”

With Murovanni’s guidance, the B Team is poised to take their training to new heights, balancing the intense physical demands of their sport with the necessary recovery and optimization required to achieve their goals. As the countdown to the major events continues, the B Team’s camp has evolved, showcasing the value of a coach who can seamlessly blend technical expertise with a deep understanding of the physiological needs of elite athletes.
