At UFC 304, England’s Leon Edwards aimed to defend his welterweight title for the third time against Belal Muhammad in a highly anticipated rematch. Despite Edwards being the fan favorite, Muhammad dominated the early rounds with effective takedowns and control. Edwards had moments of success, particularly in the third round, but Muhammad’s persistent aggression and grappling maintained his advantage. In the championship rounds, Muhammad continued to control the fight, ultimately securing a unanimous decision victory and becoming the new UFC welterweight champion. Potential future contenders for Muhammad’s title include Shavkat Rakhmonov and Ian Garry, indicating a competitive welterweight division ahead.
Muhammad is widely known as a wrestler but MMA wrestling is a different beast compared to freestyle and a resurfaced clip of Muhammad wrestling a 126 lbs wrestler Roman Bravo Young proves it.
Roman Guillermo Bravo-Young, also known as RBY, is a prominent Mexican-American wrestler born in 1999. Competing in the 57 kg weight class in both freestyle and folkstyle wrestling, Bravo-Young has achieved significant success. Representing the United States, he won gold at the 2019 U20 Pan American Championships. At Penn State, he was a two-time NCAA Division I champion and four-time All-American. In 2023, he began representing Mexico, securing multiple international titles and qualifying for the 2024 Summer Olympics. Known for his agility and acrobatic defensive maneuvers, Bravo-Young trains with elite coaches, including Cael Sanderson and UFC veteran Dominick Cruz.
Despite the size difference, Roman Bravo Young was able to get the best of Muhammad and outpace him. It was quite the video to watch. All the more impressive now that Muhammad has become a UFC champion.
