US Judo Olympic Coach Jimmy Pedro spent 6 months almost paralyzed with two bulging discs prior to medaling at the Olympics

Jimmy Pedro is one of the most accomplished figures in US judo history. A two-time Olympic medalist and world champion, Pedro has dedicated his life to the sport. However, his path to the top was not without significant challenges.

In a recent interview, Pedro recounted a harrowing experience that nearly derailed his entire career. “After being thrown on my head in Korea, I spent 6 months almost paralyzed, unable to lift my head off my chest or move my right arm,” he revealed.

This devastating injury occurred in 1994, just two years out from the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. Pedro had been working tirelessly towards his dream of Olympic gold, but this setback threatened to take it all away.

“The coach, the doctor, they pretty much said I’m never going to play sports again,” Pedro remembered. “It was my senior year in high school, I was supposed to go on and compete in the NCAA in wrestling, and I’m two years out from the Olympics in my home country and I have all these goals and aspirations, and here I am faced with massive adversity thinking I’m not even going to get a shot to do it.”

Rather than let this devastating injury crush his spirit, Pedro approached it with the same determination that had made him a champion. Through grueling physical therapy and unwavering mental toughness, he fought his way back. First, he could only kick his feet in the pool. Then, he painstakingly regained the ability to move his right arm. Step-by-step, he rebuilt himself.

“I just visualized I want to go to the Olympics,” Pedro said. “That’s what I wanted. Every morning I swam, every weight training I did, every little thing I did to get better to get back was all in hopes of competing in the ’96 games in Atlanta.”

Miraculously, Pedro not only made the 1996 Olympic team, but he went on to win the bronze medal. It was a triumph of the human spirit, a testament to the power of perseverance in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds.

Today, as the esteemed coach of two-time Olympic champion Kayla Harrison, Pedro shares this powerful story with his athletes. He wants them to understand that failure and adversity are inevitable, but that true champions find a way to rise above.

“Everybody fails, everybody loses, everybody has tough times,” Pedro emphasized. “The road to success is not one that just goes straight up…it’s going to be a rocky road and you’re going to go up and you’re going to go down.”

Through his own example, Pedro demonstrates that with unwavering belief, unrelenting effort, and the ability to visualize success, even the most daunting challenges can be overcome. His journey is a testament to the indomitable power of the human spirit.
