The Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu community is known for its fierce dedication to the art, but it seems there’s one thing that unites practitioners even more than their love for the sport: their disdain for cringeworthy motivational quotes.
A recent Gi release featuring the notorious phrase, “I am a shark, the ground is my ocean, and most people can’t even swim,” has sent ripples of secondhand embarrassment through the BJJ world.
The reaction to this bold sartorial statement has been swift and merciless. Social media platforms erupted with a mix of facepalms, eye-rolls, and outright mockery. One practitioner quipped, “I’ve never wanted to use someone’s lapel to choke them more than when I saw this Gi.”
The controversy taps into a larger debate within the BJJ community about the role of ego and self-promotion in a sport that traditionally values humility and quiet confidence. Many argue that such ostentatious displays run counter to the very essence of jiu-jitsu.
The Gi retails for 120 british pounds on the Tatami official website.
Craig Jones took aim at this trend of “alpha” motivation in the sport a while ago. In a scathing commentary, Jones lambasted the prevalence of middle-aged men posting pictures of lions and sharks with inspirational quotes, calling it “literally the gayest thing we have to battle every day in this sport.”
Jones didn’t pull any punches, mocking phrases like “Some of a king only vows to his queen” and “The ground is my ocean if I’m the shark.” He pointed out the disconnect between these grandiose statements and the reality of many practitioners: “You’re a 30-year-old I.T. worker with three kids. You’re not a member of the Gracie family. Please stop saying that.”
The backlash against the shark quote Gi highlights a broader issue within the BJJ community – the clash between personal expression and the sport’s core values. While some defend the right to wear whatever inspires them, many argue that such ostentatious displays go against the humility and quiet confidence that BJJ is supposed to instill.
