Jiu-jitsu star Mikey Musumeci recently made some interesting observations about the effects of PEDs on aging in combat sports.
In a candid interview, Musumeci compared himself to fellow grappler Gordon Ryan, noting that Ryan is only one year older but appears much more physically aged.
“Gordon Ryan’s one year older than me, but he looks like he’s 40,” Musumeci remarked to Mighty Mouse. “Are we really just one year apart? How is that possible?”
Musumeci, known for his clean lifestyle and opposition to PEDs, implied that the use of such substances could accelerate the aging process dramatically in athletes. He contrasted his own youthful appearance at age 28 with Ryan’s more weathered look at 29.
The comments highlight the ongoing debate around PED use in grappling and combat sports. While some defend their use for recovery and performance, others like Musumeci argue they come with significant long-term health costs.
Musumeci also discussed the challenges of competing against larger opponents who may be using PEDs, noting he often faces competitors 20-30 pounds heavier. Despite this, he remains committed to competing clean.
“I can still beat all those guys anyway, so it doesn’t matter,” Musumeci said. “We just have to work harder and get more technical.”
It didn’t take long for Ryan to react.
The grappling phenom’s remarks have reignited discussions around testing and regulations in professional jiu-jitsu. As the sport continues to grow, many are calling for stricter policies to create an even playing field and protect athletes’ long-term health.
For now, Musumeci remains focused on his ONE Championship grappling matches.
