BJJ Black Belt Demonstrates How Realistic John Wick’s Grappling Skills Really Are

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt Chad Hernandez Vázquez, the Head Grappling Coach at Evolution Muay Thai, analyzed the grappling scenes from John Wick 2 alongside Logan Lo. Their expert analysis sheds light on the realism and Hollywood embellishments in the film’s fight choreography.

The breakdown begins with a scene featuring John Wick and Common engaged in hand-to-hand combat. Vázquez points out that while some of the movements appear exaggerated and “Kung-Fu like,” there are genuine grappling techniques incorporated into the sequence. He identifies John Wick’s attempt at an Ōuchi Gari (a judo throw) and Common’s counter with a flying armbar.

Vázquez explains the mechanics of the armbar technique, emphasizing the importance of controlling the joint above the one being attacked. He notes that while the execution in the film is generally accurate, John Wick’s escape from the fully extended armbar is unrealistic. The coach suggests that a more plausible escape would involve grabbing the opponent’s arm earlier in the technique.

The analysis then moves to a scene showcasing pure Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu techniques. Vázquez identifies advanced guard work, including spider guard, cross sleeve grip, and lasso guard, leading to a sweep and mount position. He expresses admiration for the incorporation of these complex techniques, stating that he hasn’t seen such detailed BJJ work in other films.

However, Vázquez points out that the presence of weapons (a knife and a gun) in this grappling exchange makes the scene less realistic. He explains that in a real-life situation, it would be nearly impossible to prevent being shot from such close range.

The breakdown also covers a fireman’s carry takedown and a jacket choke attempt. Vázquez suggests that a more effective technique in that situation would have been a rear cross collar choke, demonstrating the proper execution for viewers.

Overall, Vázquez gives the grappling scenes in John Wick 2 high marks for their technical accuracy and flow. He praises the incorporation of techniques from various martial arts, including Judo, Sambo, Wrestling, and BJJ. While acknowledging some unrealistic aspects, he appreciates how the techniques guide the characters through the environment and seamlessly combine with striking and weapon work.
