Merab Dvalishvili talks confronting fan who heckled him at Craig Jones Invitational

UFC bantamweight champion Merab Dvalishvili recently shared his experience confronting hecklers at the Craig Jones Invitational jiu-jitsu event. Speaking on Jake Shields’ podcast, Dvalishvili recounted how he reacted when a fan began taunting him from the stands.

“I’m sitting there watching jiu-jitsu, enjoying the moment, beautiful place, good people, everybody respectful,” Dvalishvili said. “Then one guy starts screaming ‘Aljamain is your daddy’ and laughing at me.”

The Georgian fighter explained that he initially tried to ignore the heckler, but the taunts continued. “I looked at him like, ‘Shut up,'” Dvalishvili recalled. “I get up and look at him, thinking he’ll stop. But he keeps going.”

At that point, Dvalishvili decided to confront the fan directly. “I’m not going to just sit there. I have to go talk to him face-to-face,” he said. “Of course, he backs up when I approach.”

Dvalishvili emphasized that he comes from a culture where disrespect is taken seriously. “We are tough people, we’re fighters. If I say something to you, I mean it,” he explained. “Some guys think they can run their mouth without consequences, but that’s not how it works where I’m from.”

The incident highlights the sometimes tense relationship between fighters and overzealous fans. Dvalishvili made it clear he won’t tolerate disrespect, especially in person. “We’re real people. You can’t just talk trash like it’s the internet,” he stated.

While no physical altercation occurred, Dvalishvili’s willingness to confront the heckler sent a message. The champion believes fans should show more respect, particularly when interacting with athletes in person.
