Queer trans neurodivergent BJJ Black belt Will Wiedenhoft opens up on running a BJJ Academy

In the heart of Northfield, Minnesota, a unique Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu gym is making waves in the martial arts community. Misfits Jiujitsu, owned and operated by Professor Will Wiedenhoft, is breaking barriers and creating an inclusive space for practitioners of all backgrounds.

Wiedenhoft, a BJJ black belt, proudly identifies as queer, trans, and neurodivergent. Their journey in martial arts has been shaped by personal experiences with chronic health issues, including chronic pain, fatigue, hypermobile joints, anxiety, and depression. These challenges, however, have only fueled their passion for teaching and supporting others who may face similar obstacles.

“I absolutely love teaching Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu,” Wiedenhoft enthuses. “I truly think that’s why I’m here on this Earth.” This dedication to the art and its potential to empower individuals is evident in the welcoming atmosphere at Misfits Jiujitsu.

The gym’s mission goes beyond traditional martial arts training. Wiedenhoft has created a safe haven for those who may feel out of place in conventional settings. “If you identify with any one of those things I mentioned, or if you feel like you don’t fit in for any other reason, then I created this gym for you,” they explain.

Misfits Jiujitsu is actively reaching out to the community, inviting curious onlookers and potential students to experience their inclusive approach firsthand. The gym recently hosted an open class, allowing the public to observe and ask questions about their unique training environment.
