Demetrious Johnson says he was offered a mixed rules match with Musumeci but he turned it down

Former UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson disclosed that he recently declined an intriguing proposition for a high-profile matchup against Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu champion Mikey Musumeci.

Johnson, widely regarded as one of the greatest mixed martial artists of all time, shared that he was approached with an offer to compete against Musumeci in a unique format. The proposed contest would have featured one round of grappling followed by a round of mixed martial arts, blending the strengths of both athletes.

“I mean, they offered me to do a super fight with Mikey Musumeci . They’re like, ‘Hey, what do you think about doing a grappling match with Mikey?’ And then we were going back and forth with the price, and we just kind of came to terms. And then they’re like, ‘How about a super fight with Mikey Musumeci ? We’ll do one round grappling, one round mixed martial arts.’ And I was like, guys, I truly don’t care about fighting. You know, I just had an offer, you know, I think it was maybe three weeks ago for great money, phenomenal money. And I was like, I don’t, I just don’t care to fight. I truly don’t care to fight mixed martial arts anymore.” – Johnson told Ariel Helwani.

The matchup generated significant buzz among combat sports enthusiasts, given the stellar reputations of both competitors. Musumeci, a multiple-time Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu world champion, has been making waves in the grappling world with his exceptional technique and submission skills.

Despite the allure of the contest and what Johnson described as “phenomenal money” on the table, he ultimately decided to pass on the opportunity. The former champion expressed a lack of interest in returning to MMA, stating, “I truly don’t care about competing anymore.”

This decision comes as a disappointment to fans who were eager to see how Johnson’s well-rounded skill set would fare against Musumeci’s grappling expertise. However, it also speaks to Johnson’s contentment with his current position and his willingness to prioritize other aspects of his life over financial gain.

Johnson’s stance raises questions about the future of his career and whether he will consider any competitive offers moving forward. For now, it seems the legendary star is content to focus on other pursuits outside of the spotlight of professional competition.

Demetrious Johnson: Gi Jiu-Jitsu Is Way Harder Than MMA

Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson, one of MMA’s most dominant athletes, recently shared that his toughest challenges have come not in the octagon, but on the mats of gi-based jiu-jitsu.

Johnson explained how the technical and strategic complexities of grappling in the gi, such as dealing with grips and controlling space, present a greater challenge compared to MMA. He likened the difference between gi and no-gi jiu-jitsu to the unpredictability of a traffic stop versus the calculated risks of a SWAT operation.

Despite his immense success in MMA, Johnson found renewed passion in gi jiu-jitsu, embracing its intricacies and enjoying the problem-solving aspect it brings. His journey has led him to prepare for his debut at the IBJJF Masters black belt level, choosing to focus on this new challenge even over lucrative MMA opportunities.
