UFC veteran Alistair Overeem has been a BJJ blue belt for 7 years

In a surprising revelation for the combat sports world, former UFC heavyweight contender Alistair Overeem has maintained his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu  blue belt status for an unexpected seven years. The Dutch-British mixed martial artist, known for his striking prowess, has been quietly honing his ground game since 2014 under the tutelage of the Valente Brothers.

Overeem, who boasts an impressive MMA record with 17 submission victories, received his blue belt promotion in 2017. Despite his extensive experience in professional MMA, the former Strikeforce Heavyweight Champion has chosen to embrace the traditional BJJ journey, emphasizing the importance of earning each rank through dedicated practice and skill development.

In a recent social media post, Overeem shared a video of himself training at the Valente Brothers academy, captioning it, “Mastering the art of jiu-jitsu with the Valente Brothers. 🥋 It’s all about precision, patience, and persistence.”

Overeem spending years as a blue belt is in stark constrast to supermodel Gisele Bundchen – who the Valente brothers promoted to purple belt after training for just two years.

During a past interview, Overeem expressed his philosophy regarding belt promotions, stating, “It’s about being humble. It’s about starting on the bottom of the ladder, and progressing.”

Overeem retired from professional MMA and dropped a considerable amount of weight in the last year, yet the headlines about him were dominated by a different topic.

A recent photograph of former Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem has sparked discussions about his health, with fans expressing both awe and concern. In an interview, Overeem revealed that his decision to retire from MMA and kickboxing, while not yet formalized, stems from a shift in his diet and health.

He explained how his nutritionist convinced him to become vegan after discovering parasites in his body, which influenced his taste for meat.

This revelation led to a dramatic change in Overeem’s physique. Despite announcing his retirement, his management confirmed that Overeem plans to compete in one or two more fights before officially stepping away from the sport. At 43, Overeem has had an impressive career, securing notable victories over top competitors like Brock Lesnar and Fabricio Werdum.
