Gracie University black belt burns belt, turns on coaches: Rener Gracie is a spineless rat, Ryron is worse

Former Gracie University instructor Evandro Nunes has publicly denounced Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and its prominent figures, igniting a firestorm within the martial arts community. Nunes, a black belt with over 18 years of experience, took to social media to express his disillusionment with the sport and its leadership.

In a bold move that has left many stunned, Nunes burned his black belt on camera, symbolically severing ties with the art he once loved. He accompanied this act with scathing words directed at two of BJJ’s most recognizable names, Rener and Ryron Gracie, calling them out for what he perceives as a betrayal of the sport’s core values.

“I want people to know that these leaders who preach integrity may not always practice it,” Nunes stated in a social media caption. He alleges that the Gracie brothers have prioritized profit over people, contributing to a culture that he can no longer endorse.

Nunes’ journey from passionate practitioner to disillusioned critic paints a picture of a man grappling with the commercialization of martial arts. He describes a gradual awakening to what he calls “the lies of jiu-jitsu,” citing issues such as political promotions, the illusion of champions, and the exploitation of the art for fame and entertainment.

The former instructor’s critique extends beyond individual figures to encompass the broader BJJ community. He laments the focus on techniques, points, and ego, arguing that these elements have overshadowed the true essence of martial arts: empowering individuals and instilling authentic self-confidence.

Nunes’ actions have sparked intense debate within the BJJ world. Some view his stance as a necessary wake-up call, while others see it as an extreme reaction to personal grievances.

What is apparent from his social media is that this is also an attempt to market himself. While Rener Gracie was never anyone’s favorite in the communtiy – he was always a good marketer and perhaps this is the title Nunes is really wanting to take away from Gracie with this series of wordy posts that never quite detail what the actual beef is about.
