Sadulaev won a world championship in wrestling with a titanium plate in his neck

Russian wrestling legend Abdulrashid Sadulaev has once again claimed the top spot on the world stage, securing his sixth world title at the Non-Olympic Weight Categories World Championships in Tirana, Albania.

Competing in the 92kg weight class for the first time in his career, Sadulaev dominated the field, culminating in a decisive 6-0 victory over Georgia’s Miriani Maisuradze in the final match on October 31. This triumph adds to Sadulaev’s impressive collection of global gold medals, marking his third different weight class conquest.

What makes Sadulaev’s victory even more extraordinary is the adversity he faced leading up to the championship. The two-time Olympic champion had been absent from competition due to a combination of injuries and circumstances beyond his control, including a serious neck injury sustained at the 2023 World Championships in Belgrade.

“I can’t express what I feel yet,” Sadulaev said after his victory. “I am very happy to be back on the top place of the podium of the world championships. This time it was a bit more difficult than the previous ones. There were many things that didn’t depend on me. I am glad.”

Sadulaev’s journey to gold began with a challenging first-round match against American superstar David Taylor, which he won handily. In the semifinals, he demonstrated his unwavering determination by securing a last-second 4-point takedown to edge out Iran’s Kamran Ghasempour 5-3.

The Russian champion revealed that his preparation for this weight class was relatively brief. “I found out that I will be wrestling at 92kg at the worlds only at the end of September,” he explained. “One and a half months was enough for me to prepare.”

Despite his success at 92kg, Sadulaev confirmed that this was a one-time venture. “This was the only one time for me wrestling at 92kg. This is not my weight class, I will be back at 97kg again. I just used this opportunity not to lose another year. I had to make history to win the world championships in three different weight classes.”

Sadulaev’s triumph serves as a testament to his exceptional talent, determination, and ability to overcome adversity. As he returns to his preferred 97kg weight class, the wrestling world eagerly anticipates his future performances and the possibility of adding even more accolades to his already illustrious career.
