8-year old Bo Nickal Told His Parents He Wanted Cauliflower Ears Badly

Bo Nickal, the rising UFC middleweight star, has always been passionate about combat sports. In a recent revelation, Nickal shared a childhood anecdote that highlights his early dedication to wrestling.

At the tender age of 8, young Nickal approached his parents with an unusual request: he wanted cauliflower ears. This condition, common among wrestlers and other combat sports practitioners, is caused by repeated trauma to the outer ear, resulting in a distinctive, lumpy appearance.

For many, cauliflower ears might be seen as an unfortunate side effect of the sport. However, for the young Nickal, it was a badge of honor – a physical manifestation of his commitment to wrestling.

This early enthusiasm for the sport’s physical demands foreshadowed Nickal’s future success. Now 27, he has transitioned from a decorated collegiate wrestling career at Penn State to a promising start in mixed martial arts.

Nickal’s journey in combat sports has been marked by rapid progress and bold decisions. In a recent interview, he revealed that he once agreed to grapple with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu legend Gordon Ryan after only three jiu-jitsu training sessions. “I just dm’d him I was like ‘hey bro, like I don’t know what the issue is why nobody will go against you but like Count Me In man,'” Nickal recalled.

Despite his limited jiu-jitsu experience at the time, Nickal’s wrestling background provided a solid foundation for his MMA career. He currently boasts a perfect 4-0 professional record, with all wins coming by stoppage.

Nickal’s father played a crucial role in his athletic development, encouraging a multi-sport approach during his formative years. “I did a bunch of sports growing up. I played football, baseball, ran track,” Nickal said. “My father actually made me take breaks periodically from wrestling. Up until I was 16 years old, there were a lot of other sports and things that I was doing.”

As Nickal prepares for his upcoming bout against Paul Craig at UFC 295, he remains focused on continuous improvement. “Paul Craig’s a guy that poses a lot of problems. He’s finished some of the best guys in the world,” Nickal noted. “I think I have an advantage on the feet, but it would be nice to be able to show my improvements on the ground in my Jiu-Jitsu game.”

From a young boy dreaming of cauliflower ears to a UFC prospect on the rise, Bo Nickal’s journey in combat sports continues to captivate fans and observers alike. His story serves as a testament to the power of early passion and dedication in shaping an athlete’s career.
