WATCH: BJJ Black belt tries defending himself against Female Judo champ

In a display of martial arts expertise, accomplished Judo champion Aurélia Agel recently demonstrated the effectiveness of Judo defensive techniques to a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt, Kevin Lee on his channel, highlighting the unique power of Judo gripping and throwing techniques.

The lesson began with fundamental grip defense, with Agel showing how to break various gripping attempts through strategic hand placement and leverage. She emphasized the importance of proper grip breaking, demonstrating techniques including downward breaks, cross-grip breaks, and elbow strikes to defend against collar grabs.

One particularly striking moment came when Agel showcased her competition strategy, revealing how she would destabilize opponents through strategic gripping and shaking, a technique that proved especially effective given her height advantage. “Once you have the grip, you don’t let it go,” Agel explained, demonstrating the overwhelming control this approach provides.

The session culminated in a 30-second challenge where Lee attempted to defend against Agel’s attacks. Despite his BJJ expertise, Lee managed to defend only a handful of times, later admitting, “The defense, once you start to off-balance my body, is way harder than I expected.”

The encounter served as a powerful reminder of Judo’s effectiveness, particularly in stand-up situations. Agel, who now works as a professional stunt performer, demonstrated why Judo remains one of the most formidable martial arts for throwing and grip fighting.

This cross-training session highlighted the unique challenges BJJ practitioners might face when dealing with high-level Judo techniques, particularly in the standing phase of combat, where Judo’s specialized gripping and balance-breaking methods prove especially effective.
