In a funny revelation on his podcast, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu legend Andre Galvao shared an amusing yet tense moment from his marriage to fellow BJJ practitioner Angelica Galvao that temporarily disrupted their household harmony.
During a training session in Brazil where Galvao was teaching, what started as a routine rolling session with his wife took an unexpected turn. The incident occurred during a rotational training exercise with students watching.
“I always move and let her roll and all that,” Galvao recalled. “And she always went really hard, she always go hard.”
The situation escalated when Angelica secured a clock choke on her husband. Despite Galvao’s attempts to tap out, his wife didn’t notice the submission signal, resulting in him briefly losing consciousness in front of his students.
“She put me to sleep in front of all my students, but nobody noticed I slept,” Galvao explained. “I was trying to bring myself back.”
The aftermath led to a heated discussion at home, with Galvao expressing his frustration: “Why did you put me to sleep in front of all my students? Are you crazy?”
In a moment of heightened emotion, Galvao left home and found himself at a bus station at 10 PM. “Honestly, I was just trying to like wan my mind, I was trying to get some air because I was very mad,” he said.
The situation was eventually resolved when Angelica called him to return home. Reflecting on the incident, Galvao admitted, “I’m so stupid, you know.”
The story offers a rare glimpse into the dynamics of a marriage between two high-level BJJ practitioners, showing that even world-class athletes have their moments of vulnerability both on and off the mats.
