WATCH: Brown belt takes down man in alleged home invasion in Sydney

A martial arts practitioner successfully subdued an intruder during an alleged home invasion in Sydney’s eastern suburbs on Sunday morning.

The incident occurred around 3:20 AM when Ben Fordham, who holds a brown belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, confronted a man who had allegedly entered his family residence in Redfern through an unlocked door.

Fordham, maintaining his composure, utilized his martial arts training to restrain the alleged intruder until law enforcement arrived at the scene. New South Wales Police confirmed they arrested a 28-year-old man at the location.

“I heard some noise downstairs and went to investigate,” Fordham explained to News.au. “When I encountered the individual in my home, my training kicked in automatically. The priority was ensuring the safety of my family.”

The accused was taken to Redfern Police Station where he was charged with break and enter with intent and trespassing. He was refused bail and is scheduled to appear at Central Local Court.

Local authorities praised Fordham’s controlled response to the situation. Senior Constable Sarah Thompson stated, “While we don’t encourage confronting intruders, in this instance, the resident’s specialized training allowed him to handle the situation safely.”

The incident has sparked discussions about home security in the neighborhood, with local residents’ groups organizing a community meeting to address safety concerns.

Police remind residents to ensure their properties are secured at night and to immediately contact emergency services if they suspect a break-in.
