Gordon Ryan goes nuclear on Musumeci, calls him out for team switching and tries to claim PEDs are legal

The world of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has always been a hotbed for rivalries, but the latest exchange between Mikey Musumeci and Gordon Ryan has taken things to another level. What started as a critique of PED use and ethics in BJJ quickly spiraled into a heated war of words. Ryan fired back with biting accusations of hypocrisy, while Craig Jones added a touch of humor to an otherwise tense situation.

Mikey Musumeci’s Critique

At the UFC 311 press conference, Mikey Musumeci openly criticized PED use in BJJ, calling out what he described as a lack of “ethics and morals” in the sport. He also pointed fingers at prominent figures, including Gordon Ryan and Craig Jones, for embodying values he felt were at odds with martial arts traditions. “They really don’t have the values of martial artists,” Musumeci remarked, emphasizing his vision for a professionalized, clean version of the sport.

Musumeci’s statements set the stage for an over-the-top response from Gordon Ryan, who is never one to shy away from confrontation.

Gordon Ryan Responds

Gordon Ryan took to social media to deliver a scathing rebuke, attacking Musumeci’s credibility and character. In his first response, Ryan accused Musumeci of lacking loyalty and integrity:

“The guy talking about ethics and morals has been on 37 different jiu-jitsu teams, got what he could from them, and left. You wanna have my d**k in your mouth constantly and talk about morals? How about start with loyalty. This little rat’s been on more teams than Keenan. Taking what he wishes and when he can’t learn anymore, leaves to the next. Get off your moral high ground, dork.”

Ryan dismissed Musumeci’s critique of PEDs, pointing out that ster*ids are not banned in most competitions outside the IBJJF and suggesting that Musumeci’s complaints stemmed from his inability to achieve similar success.

“Ster*ids are legal in every competition minus specific IBJJF competitions since 2019. It’s not cheating. All I hear is an excuse for why you could never do what others, specifically I, have done.”

He then attacked Musumeci’s claims of mental fortitude, calling him out for sharing emotional posts about his mental health while allegedly avoiding tougher competition.

“Then, he’s going off about mental fortitude, the same chicken sh*t that posts once every few months about his mental health and how sad he is and how he can’t handle people talking sh*t to him. The same guy who got invited to ADCC more than anyone who’s never competed and didn’t even compete because he’s afraid he can’t win in that ruleset. Made up some BS excuses and pulled out every time.”

In a follow-up comment, Ryan added:

“Could’ve quit while you were behind 🤷‍♂️. Remember—not only did I not start it, I only said nice things about him until he constantly had my name in his mouth.”

Craig Jones Adds Humor

Craig Jones, a frequent target of Musumeci’s critiques, responded to the drama with humor. He shared a montage on social media of both himself and Musumeci visiting Asian massage parlors, captioning it: “Why all the negative energy? Aren’t we one and the same @mikeymusumeci?”

Musumeci, proving that autism is the base of jiujitsu and unable to take the joke lightly, commented on the post: “I go there every week to get rid of my knots in neck 🤣😭.” While Jones’s lighthearted approach brought some levity to the feud, it also highlighted the stark contrast between his and Musumeci’s responses to controversy.

A Debate in the BJJ Community

The Musumeci-Ryan clash has sparked widespread debate in the BJJ community. Supporters of Musumeci praise his commitment to a clean, professionalized sport, while critics argue that his moral stance comes across as hypocritical given Ryan’s accusations of team-hopping and lack of loyalty.

Ryan, on the other hand, continues to polarize fans with his unapologetically brash demeanor. While some see him as a dominant competitor defending his choices, others view his aggressive rhetoric as unnecessary and divisive.

Craig Jones’s comedic approach, meanwhile, has endeared him to fans who appreciate his ability to diffuse tension with humor. Jones went on to link his stack once again on social media in a blatant attempt to monetize the public attack.

Looking Ahead

Whether this war of words will escalate further or fade into the background remains to be seen. What’s certain, however, is that this feud underscores the deep divisions in the BJJ world over issues like PED use, professionalism, and personal ethics.
