UFC lightweight star Paddy Pimblett emerged victorious in a unique Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu “Royal Rumble” tournament held at his academy during their end-of-year grading ceremony. The event, which coincided with the academy’s annual belt promotions, featured an unconventional “king of the mat” format where all participants grappled simultaneously in a last-man-standing contest.
The tournament followed specific rules, as Pimblett explained in a clip: “When you tap someone, you need to put your hand up because you’re going to be the next roll – someone can jump on your back and choke you anytime.” Competitors remained on the mat until submitted, with successful participants having to stay alert even after securing a submission. Safety remained a priority during the festive season event, with participants encouraged to tap early if caught in submissions to prevent injuries.
The prize for the winner included both monetary compensation and a symbolic plastic crown, with Pimblett choosing to double the prize money for charity. The tournament served as one of Pimblett’s final major training sessions before heading to Las Vegas for his upcoming bout that has yet to be announced.
Currently, Pimblett is in the final stages of his camp for a ‘top 8 ranked opponent.’ After completing a simulation with training partner Paul Reed, he appears confident and in peak condition. Regarding his weight cut, Pimblett needs to lose 15 pounds from his current weight of 170 pounds, which he claims he has done overnight before, describing it as “going to be easy this time around.”
Pimblett has a documented history of massively gaining weight outside of a camp.
Feeling optimistic about his preparation, Pimblett stated it’s “very cliche as I’ve said several times on the vlogs this camp, best I’ve ever felt, and you are going to see that.” The tournament victory not only demonstrated Pimblett’s grappling prowess but also highlighted the thriving BJJ community at his academy, with the event concluding with group photos and celebrations marking a successful end to the year’s training.
