WATCH: BJJ Instructor awards student’s helper honary belt and red stripes for supporting the team

In a heartwarming display of community recognition, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academy has honored a dedicated team supporter with a special honorary belt and red stripes, typically reserved for celebrating young students’ achievements and effort.

The recipient, who has been attending training sessions up to three times weekly for over a year, serves as a communication bridge for a deaf team member while learning sign language. Despite not participating in physical training, their consistent presence and support have made them an integral part of the academy’s community.

“I love going and watching and learning more about the sport,” the honoree shared on R/BJJWomen. “We’ve all become really good friends.” The coaching staff surprised them with their own belt adorned with red stripes, a gesture that left them “absolutely overwhelmed.”

The special recognition system, typically used to acknowledge children’s efforts and mutual support within the academy, was adapted to celebrate this unique contribution to the team. The belt has become one of the recipient’s most prized possessions.

The story highlights the inclusive nature of BJJ communities, where support extends beyond the training mats. “BJJ really is like a family,” the honoree remarked, emphasizing how the sport creates bonds that transcend physical participation.

What began as a chance encounter – helping their spouse with transportation to training when their car broke down – has evolved into a meaningful role within the academy’s ecosystem, demonstrating how martial arts communities can embrace and value various forms of participation and support.
