WATCH: Ex-Boxer Arrested After Fatal Punch

A former Thai boxer with a history of mental illness has been taken into custody after an incident during New Year’s Day celebrations in Sakon Nakhon, Thailand.

The suspect, identified only as Tum, 38, allegedly went at several volunteer security guards at the event. One target, identified as Somchai, suffered fatal head injuries after falling down and striking the ground. Three other security personnel sustained minor injuries in the incident.

 

Law enforcement officers apprehended Tum at his residence near the scene. During questioning, the suspect appeared disoriented and remained unresponsive to police inquiries. Witnesses at the scene reported that Tum exhibited unusual physical strength during the incident.

Authorities revealed that the former boxer had previously undergone mental health treatments and had a history of dr*g use. He may now face charges under Section 297 of Thailand’s criminal law, which carries potential penalties of six months to 10 years imprisonment and fines of up to $5,800.

The case has drawn attention to issues surrounding mental health and public safety in the region. Local authorities continue their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragic event.
