UFC Hall of Famer Matt Serra Reflects on Viral Video: ‘A Great Advertisement for Jiu-Jitsu’

In a recent podcast interview, Matt Serra recounted an incredible incident that he describes as the perfect advertisement for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

The story unfolded at Red Rock Casino during a Fourth of July weekend, where Serra was with his wife, three daughters, and sister. What started as a peaceful family dinner quickly escalated when an unruly couple entered the restaurant.

The guy got up and said, “You got a problem?” Serra realized this could have been a very different situation if he didn’t know how to defend himself.

“I tell my sister, ‘Sammy, go film this, because you know what’s gonna happen after the guy’s gonna claim I attacked him.'”

“The first thing I was thinking was, ‘My wife will probably never want to be with me again.’ The second he did that, he went to take his shirt off. So once he’s taking his shirt off, you know, I get around the waist, put him down, mount. The place starts clapping.”

Instead of responding with an unnecessary escalation, Serra used his jiu-jitsu skills to control the situation. He strategically took the individual down, mounted him, and effectively neutralized the threat without causing serious harm.

Serra noted, “this is why Jiu-Jitsu’s a great advertisement. I don’t exactly look like Quinton Jackson, but I don’t look like a f***ing p****. So for this guy to call me out in front of my wife and kids—what if I didn’t know how to handle myself? That could be devastating. ”

Rampage added: “Women leave men for s**t like that.”

The story perfectly demonstrated the practical application of martial arts training – protecting oneself and others while minimizing potential damage. Serra’s calm, controlled response highlighted the essence of jiu-jitsu: technique over brute force.

The story quickly went viral, with Dana White and others in the UFC community sharing the video, ultimately turning a potentially dangerous bar confrontation into a powerful demonstration of martial arts discipline.
