Mackenzie Dern: CJI brought more entertainment and a different perspective to the Jiu-Jitsu industry

In a recent press conference ahead of her UFC headlining bout, strawweight contender Mackenzie Dern shared insights about her competition at the Craig Jones Invitational (CJI) and expressed interest in potentially competing in the UFC’s newly announced jiu-jitsu organization.

CJI event is bringing more entertainment and a different perspective to the Jiu-Jitsu industry

Dern, who competed at CJI just 12 days after her UFC bout with Marina Rodriguez, described the experience as uniquely challenging due to the event’s distinct format. “When I went to the pit, it was like completely different angles,” Dern explained, noting how the setting differed from her usual UFC cage environment. Despite the quick turnaround, Dern viewed the opportunity positively, praising CJI’s contribution to the sport. “They’re doing a lot of entertainment for the jiu-jitsu industry. We’ve been so much sport, but they’re bringing something different.”

Mackenzie Dern’s Use of a Service Dog for Emotional Support

In an interesting revelation during the press conference, Dern discussed her use of her service dog named Mac for emotional support during preparation. The imposing canine accompanies her to the gym and helps maintain her composure during training. “I think what I’m most needing in my fights is composure,” Dern explained, emphasizing how Mac helps her stay relaxed and prevents her nerves from escalating.

Dern is interested in the possibility of getting involved with the UFC’s newly announced Jiu-Jitsu organization

Following Dana White’s announcement of the UFC’s new jiu-jitsu organization, Dern expressed enthusiasm about potentially participating. “Definitely maybe I can get a side contract and getting into that too within my UFC fights,” she said, highlighting the natural fit given her decorated background in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Dern has been training extensively on her wrestling and takedowns, which she believes will allow her to mix her striking and grappling

The Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt revealed significant developments in her wrestling game, crediting her work with coach Paul Herrera in Huntington Beach.

“I used to hate wrestling, I just kind of do my Judo takedowns when we got in the clinch,” Dern admitted. “Now I feel even with Lupita, who’s a boxer-wrestler, I was proud I was able to get takedowns and mix my striking with my takedowns.”

Dern and her family recently purchased a horse named Apollo, which she is excited to spend time with and go horseback riding

Looking ahead to 2025, Dern shared her personal goals, including a recent family addition – a horse named Apollo. This purchase reflects her desire to balance her career with quality family time and new experiences.

“Take some time horseback riding and travel when I can,” Dern said, outlining her plans to maintain a well-rounded lifestyle outside the octagon while working on building her brand and pursuing championship aspirations.
