Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu isn’t just about fancy techniques—it’s about understanding human movement and developing practical skills. Tommy Langaker, a decorated European champion, offers a refreshing perspective on self-defense that goes beyond traditional martial arts dogma.
Growing up in Hogesund, Norway, Langaker’s martial arts journey began early with Japanese Jiu-Jitsu. In a conversation a while ago with the Grappling Central podcast he revealed:
“I started training Jiu-Jitsu from an interest of MMA and self-defense. So
I was in a very kind of self-defense oriented school when I first started training.
And over time, it’s become much more of a sport driven art at this point.”“I was never into [just] self-defense… I was always interested in fighting,”
he explains. This early exposure to a multi-disciplinary approach laid the groundwork for his dynamic grappling style.
When discussing real-world self-defense, Langaker is pragmatic.
“I’m not going to sit on my butt. If somebody attacks me… I know I’m not going to pull guard in the str eet fi ght. I’m not an idiot.”
His philosophy emphasizes practical knowledge over rigid systems.
“If you had two classes of jiu-jitsu in your life and you did two sparring sessions, you still have a 90% better knowledge than anybody else,”
Langaker argues, highlighting that even minimal training provides significant advantages.
For Langaker, martial arts is fundamentally about personal expression.
“It’s an art. It’s an expression of yourself,”
he states, encouraging practitioners to develop their unique style rather than merely copying techniques.
This approach has made him one of the most exciting competitors in modern Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, with a game built on flexibility, creativity, and an intuitive understanding of human movement.
Langaker recently revealed in a reddit Q and A that we won’t be seeing him in MMA because he broke his jaw in an altercation.
Langaker also revealed that in all that time in martial arts he only accrued 3 horrible injuries – disc injuries and a broken jaw.
