ADCC bronze medalist Dan Manasoiu has challenged the claims made by Ecological BJJ advocate Greg Souders regarding the teaching methods of renowned instructor John Danaher.
Souders, who has been at the forefront of promoting the “Ecological Dynamics” approach in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, has been critical of traditional instructional techniques, including those used by Danaher. In a podcast appearance, Souders directly confronted Danaher’s teaching philosophy, stating that the idea of needing knowledge to start learning is
“the craziest thing” he has ever heard.
Souders went on to claim that Danaher’s instructional DVDs, such as his leglock series, merely repeat the same core ideas with slight variations, rather than providing substantive content. He sarcastically suggested that viewers could save $400 by simply learning that
“your feet either go outside, inside, or mixed” and that they should “place the leg on one side or the other, stay connected, and move your partner’s legs.”
However, Manasoiu, who trains under Danaher, has taken issue with Souders’ criticism. In a scathing post, Manasoiu accused Souders of spreading
“misinformation” and “diluting the essence of the sport” with his “flawed concept” of the Ecological Approach.
Manasoiu argued that Souders’ claims demonstrate a lack of real accomplishments in the sport, despite speaking as if he has
“some kind of authority.”
He asserted that it is time to
“separate fact from fiction and put this discussion to rest,”
calling for a live debate between Souders and the broader Jiu-Jitsu community.
The post further stated that Souders’ ideas cannot be ignored any longer, as the
“misinformation being pushed can’t be ignored any longer.”
Manasoiu challenged Souders to a live-streamed debate, saying the Jiu-Jitsu community as a whole will
“thank [him] for finally addressing this and setting the record straight.”
The ongoing debate between the proponents of traditional instructional techniques and the Ecological Dynamics approach has been a topic of discussion within the Jiu-Jitsu community. This latest exchange between Manasoiu and Souders has further escalated the tensions, with both sides adamant about the merits of their respective teaching philosophies.
Manasoiu’s full post:
“For thousands of years, all of human progress across every culture and discipline has been built on the foundation of passing knowledge down through generations, refining and improving it over time. This approach completely undermines that tradition, discarding hard-earned wisdom in favor of empty rhetoric that does nothing but confuse and mislead serious practitioners.”
