“”it was almost, what, three years with no ACL? And then actually, in the last CJI camp, it just completely ruined my camp. .”
“I mean, probably going to be getting ACL reconstruction soon, so that kind of sucks.”
“I pretty much didn’t train for like the last three weeks [of my camp] because anytime I train, it would just get super sore and I’d be literally limping that night.”
Ryan explained.
ACL recovery typically takes around 9 months.
He recently underwent another MRI and will have a follow-up appointment with his surgeon to determine the exact surgery date. Based on the conversations, Ryan will likely be out of competitive training for a significant portion of 2025 during his rehabilitation.
Ryan noted that pulling guard feels more comfortable currently, as it doesn’t put as much strain on his unstable knee compared to wrestling or more weight-bearing activities.
The injury follows a similar ACL reconstruction experience by his training partner Ethan Crelinsten, who recommended using supportive braces and being cautious during recovery. Crelinsten also didn’t have an ACL in years. Crelinsten had a part of his quad grafted on to it and seems to be content with his knee at the present.
Fans of Ryan will need to be patient as he goes through this surgical and rehabilitation process.
