Top girls Wrestling team suspended over one parent’s actions

One of Oklahoma’s top girls wrestling teams has been suspended following an incident involving a parent at a recent tournament, marking the first disciplinary action of its kind by the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association (OSSAA).

Edmond North High School’s girls wrestling team, ranked among the state’s best, had their season abruptly ended due to what OSSAA described as an “egregious act” by a parent. The suspension falls under an OSSAA rule established in 2022, which allows for teams or individuals to be suspended for the remainder of the season if two or more unsportsmanlike conduct incidents occur at the same school and activity during the same season. This rule encompasses behavior from players, coaches, fans, and parents.

The suspension has particularly impacted senior Bella Williams, recognized by USA Wrestling as one of the nation’s most successful wrestlers. Williams was pursuing her fourth consecutive state title before the team’s suspension.

Edmond Public Schools has filed an appeal against the decision, stating, “We do not believe the team should be suspended over the actions of a parent.” The identity of the parent responsible for the incident has not been disclosed.

OSSAA defended their decision in a statement, noting, “This policy has been in place for the past 3 years, and this is the first time we have had a team commit two egregious acts in the same season.”

The appeal will be heard by a board of directors on February 12th.
