Brazilian sensation Valter Walker continued his impressive run in the UFC’s heavyweight division, securing a lightning-fast heel hook submission victory over Don’Tale Mayes at UFC Vegas 102. The finish came just 1:17 into the first round at the UFC Apex facility.
Walker, the younger brother of UFC light heavyweight Johnny Walker, wasted no time implementing his game plan. He immediately changed levels and secured a takedown in the opening moments of the bout, showcasing his grappling prowess. Once on the ground, Walker methodically worked his way into position for his signature submission.
Mayes, who was looking to bounce back from his previous loss to Shamil Gaziev in August, found himself in trouble early. Despite his efforts to defend, he was unable to escape Walker’s technical ground control and eventually succumbed to the heel hook, forcing him to tap out.
This marks Walker’s second consecutive heel hook submission victory in the UFC, following his impressive win over Junior Tafa last August. In his post-fight interview with UFC analyst Daniel Cormier, Walker revealed he had predicted the submission victory before the event.
“Walker was clearly fired up,” noted Cormier during the interview, as the Brazilian celebrated his victory. This performance helps Walker put his debut loss to Łukasz Brzeski firmly in the rearview mirror, establishing himself as a rising threat in the heavyweight division with his specialized submission skills.
The victory not only showcases Walker’s evolving ground game but also adds another highlight to his growing UFC resume, suggesting an exciting future ahead for the Brazilian heavyweight.
