“I teach the bullied kids to be violent with their bullies. You can’t just sit there and be a punching bag.” – Tom DeBlass

Tom DeBlass stands out as a compassionate advocate for those who have been marginalized and bullied. His powerful anti-bullying initiative, Buddies Over Bullies, stems from a deeply personal understanding of what it means to feel powerless.

The inspiration for his program came after a tragic incident in his hometown, where a young girl took her own life – reportedly after experiencing severe bullying. DeBlass recognized that in today’s digital age, bullying has become more insidious and inescapable, with social media providing a constant platform for harassment. He told bjjfanatics podcast:

“I’m very proud Christian and Jesus lover, but I also believe in violence,” DeBlass states frankly.

He teaches his students to be kind but to establish clear boundaries and defend themselves when necessary. This philosophy stems from his belief that bullies often target those who lack confidence.

“I teach the bullied kids to be violent with their bullies. You can’t just sit there and be a punching bag.”

Through his program, DeBlass doesn’t just offer martial arts training – he provides a comprehensive support system. He reaches out to local academies, sponsors training for bullied children, and even helps with practical needs like school clothes and supplies. His goal is to rebuild these children’s confidence and give them tools to protect themselves.

Drawing from his own experiences of being bullied as a child, DeBlass understands that confidence is key. He teaches children not just physical techniques, but the importance of setting boundaries and standing up for themselves.

The program goes beyond mere self-defense. It’s about creating a community of support, showing bullied children that they are valued, loved, and capable of defending themselves. By providing free Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training, DeBlass offers these children more than just martial arts skills – he offers them hope, empowerment, and a path to reclaiming their self-worth.

Through his program, he connects bullied children with local martial arts academies, often personally sponsoring their training if needed. The program has helped over 50 children at his school alone.
