At UFC FPI 10, Victor Hugo secured a victory over Nick Rodriguez in overtime with a rear-naked choke submission, prompting immediate reaction from jiu-jitsu legend Gordon Ryan through a series of Instagram stories.
Ryan, who has had a well-documented rivalry with Rodriguez, didn’t hold back his thoughts on the match. In his social media commentary, Ryan pointed out technical observations about Rodriguez’s performance, specifically criticizing his opponent’s attempt to copy Ryan’s high head inside technique while camping in a defensive position.

“To top it all off, the ‘body lock master’ who ‘never learned anything from me’ spent the whole match doing a sh*tty rendition of my high head inside camping,” Ryan posted, using crying-laughing emojis to emphasize his point.
In another story, Ryan noted how Rodriguez had difficulty dealing with Hugo’s rash guards during the match: “Ps- funny how easy his arm got trapped with long sleeve rash guards!”
The most pointed commentary came when Ryan celebrated Hugo’s victory over Rodriguez, who is often considered one of the top wrestlers in jiu-jitsu. “The guy who everyone thinks is jj best wrestler gets OUT SCRIMMAGED BY A JIU JITSU GUY😂. You guys don’t know what you don’t know,” Ryan wrote over a screenshot of the match.
Following the event, Ryan acknowledged Hugo’s victory with a simple “Congrats @victorhugojj 4-0” in response to comments about the match outcome.
Hugo’s victory came after a largely defensive regulation period where he effectively neutralized Rodriguez’s attacks. In overtime, Hugo surprised Rodriguez by countering a takedown attempt, taking his back, and securing the match-winning rear-naked choke.
After his victory, Hugo expressed interest in potentially facing Gordon Ryan in the future, saying, “I think there’s only one guy that beat Nicky Rod on this stage… if he wants to take the challenge, I’ll be here and let’s do it.”
